West Africa is an important part of the Muslim World. The overwhelming majority of this area is Muslim and Arabic is their first or second language. This study is about two icons of the Islamic history of this region. The first is Usman Dan Fodio (d. 1817) who founded the Sokoto Caliphate in what is now north Nigeria and adjacent areas. The second is Umar Tal (d. 1864) who established the Tokolor Empire circa 1850 in what is now Mali and surrounding areas.
