From a solemn and peaceful annual pilgrimage undertaken by thousands, it has now evolved into an event involving millions thanks to the involvement in recent years of Hindutva elements who use it for consolidation of their votebank and show their concern for Hindus causes. As a result, once a quiet, introspective act of faith, driven by piety and penance, has increasingly become a raucous, socio-political event marked by violence, political patronage, and communal polarization, and exclusion of non-Hindus from use of roads and closure of Muslim-owned shops and eateries on the pilgrimage routes.
